I was doing my daily blog ~~stalking,~~ ummmm, reading, and saw this post from Fab Finds Under $50
I heart her site and love the deals and steals that she finds. She has such a great eye! After reading her post, I ran to my closet to see if I could pull this off. Well....I think I have some pieces that just may work with the exception of the ankle pants. I used a pair of cuffed capris. About 80% of my items were thrifted. What wasn't thrifted, I got either on clearance or on sale...

Just a few....this was fun! I can't wait....

Why I Thrift

There are five children in my family, of which I am the youngest. My mom and dad have always been hard working people and for as long as I can remember, we have never done without. Fast forward to now. Sometimes I talk with my parents about when we were small children and how they made it work. My mom told me that it was a struggle to keep food on the table and make sure that we had everything that we needed for school. Odd, I didn't see it that way.

For us, school shopping was hitting the thrift stores and yard sales. We always hit the"well-to-do" neighborhoods and scored some great finds. What we were lacking, she would supplement by sewing. This cycle went on for awhile. I thought everyone shopped like this. After all, I had clean clothes that looked nice and was always neat.

As I got older, for some reason, I strayed from this. I guess it was when I became old enough to work. I had my own money, so I followed the crowd and started hitting the malls. I wanted to keep up with the Joneses. Now that I am older, I have returned to what I know.

I thrift for the obvious reasons. One, it saves me money and two, I have a closet full of classic pieces and well as designer for a fraction of the cost. I thrift because, as a single mother, I can funnel my savings from thrifting into what my child may need for school. That's why I thrift. What about you??

I Love My Sister

My sister works across the street from a thrift store and when she is not at work- lunch or break, she pops in to see what she can see...This is what she saw for me....

First coat is an Apt 9. The second is a Worthington with a removable lining.

This set she found for me at Goodwill. I really love my sister!! Now, I need to purge some of my other shoes (GASP!!) I hope that I can find a good home for them. Until then......

So one of my BFFs has been ~~stalking~~ reading my blog. She really needs one of her own because her eye for putting items together is incredible.So, anyway back to the post......This week she has imposed a challenge to me-Gifted and Thrifted. I can only wear items that were either thrifted and/or gifted, shoes included. Now, of course I am up for the challenge! But.....after discussing this challenge with her, I was able to come up with "rules".

I can only wear items that were either gifted and/or thrifted, including shoes. Accessories are not included in the challenge. If I have to add something to make the thrifted/gifted outfit to work, then the piece that is to be added has to come from my Basics list, like a white tee shirt for example.

Well, let's see how I do!

Back to Basics

Some time ago I came across http://www.thebudgetfashionista.com/ and her book. What a find!! She has one section in her book where she talks about the basics that we all should have in our closet. That's when it hit me! Why not do a week of "Just Basics"?

For the upcoming week, all pieces will be basics- including shoes. I will play around with the accessories with the exception of the handbag. I will be using the basics there as well. Here's my list of basics:

Khaki skirt

Khaki pants
Dark denim jeans/trousers

Getting Ready for Spring

Okay, so I know that I need to stay on a budget. I know that I need to be uber cute. Can I do both? But, of course! After reading a thrifty LA life, I am certainly inspired. So after ~~stalking~~ , reading over some of her posts, I decided to hit my local Goodwill.

I had a game plan in my mind before hitting the store and attacking the racks. My list included:

a white pencil skirt
a denim pencil skirt
a floral print sheath dress

that's where it stopped. I also knew that I wanted to add some color to my rather neutral closet. I did find:

My New Addiction

I absolutely love scarves!!! There, I said it.....So what if I wear one every day, it's not the same one twice. And to add to my addiction, I found a website called Affordable Scarves. OMG!! If you love scarves as much as I do, then you can certainly add to your collection and expand your closet. Check out my recent goodies....

Now, since I have added three new ones, I guess I need to purge. Now, that's the hard part!

It Does Matter...Now

After losing Chipmunk, I lost a lot of weight. My parents, especially my mom, became very worried about me. Now mind you, I did eat but it was like food didn't taste the same. When I did eat, it was in small amounts. When I returned back to work, EVERYONE noticed. All my clothes that I had in my closet didn't fit anymore and I stopped caring about how I looked. I was just going through motions. While I was going through this part of the grieving process, I talked often with a BFF, who by the way is widow of 7 years.

After our move, she came to visit and we had a serious heart to heart. She, too, also commented that she was concerned about the weight loss but she understood why. I reassured her that I was eating, although I don't think that she was convinced. I saw her practically every day and this helped me enormously. I often told her that she was free therapy. If I felt like crying, she cried with me. Since she knew my late husband, when I told funny stories, she would laughs with me because, most times she was probably with him at school when they happened.

As my son and I settled in, I gradually started to take more care of how I looked. My son was starting a new school and from what I saw of those moms at orientation, let's just say I had to step my game WAY up! This was the jolt that I needed.

Since nothing fit anymore, I had to start all over again with the basics and work my way up. I was job hunting in between all of this so I had to be methodical with my purchases because they would have to work in an office setting as well. I have to admit, it felt good wanting to shop again.

One day in the book store, I stumbled across Nina Garcia's What to Wear for Every Occasion Look Book.
What a gem! She gives you scenarios and suggests what should be worn for them. I have referred to this book now for several occasions that have had me stumped.

I am happy to say that my mom has put most of my weight back on me. I take more thought into what I am wearing and what I am going to wear. I feel better when I look better, if that makes any sense? When I didn't care how I looked, I felt miserable and wanted to wallow in my loneliness. One day I realized that I am not alone, my son and I have a family that loves us and is there for us. Looking good helps me feel good. I want more happy days than sad days. I know that Chipmunk wouldn't want it any other way. So see, it does matter....now.

Back...Sort of

This is my first post in a LONG time. So much has happened, I don't know where to begin. November 07, 2009, I lost my husband of 12 years to a heart attack. He died suddenly at home, in my arms. Mini me and I have moved to be closer to family and friends. He has enjoyed being with everyone and seeing them on a day to day basis. He even likes his new school. Me, on the other hand, I am still adjusting. I liked having my space-4 hours away- space! But, I will admit that seeing my mom and dad every day is awesome!!

My sisters and I are closer than ever and I attribute that to being here and seeing them almost daily as well. We hang out, grab lunch or dinner and get in LOTS of shopping!!! It's great when one of your sisters wears the same shoe size as you!!

Well, we'll see how this move goes and our transition from one state to another. I hope to concentrate on blogging more to help my mind. I miss my husband every day. The one year sadiversary was rough! I surrounded the two of us with family and framily and that helped alot. Until the next post.......

One Down, Many More to Sew

My linen skirt, Simplicity 4036, is all done. I was finally able to sit at my machine and stay awake long enough to finish it. I know that was a simple pattern, but as I have said before, I want to focus more on fit. I ended up making it in a size 18 w/ no changes. My first trial was too big in the waist and hips. After some adjustments, I figured out the correct size. My photographer fell asleep on me, so I hope to have some pics of me wearing it soon.

Ramblings....

So it's obvious that there has been no sewing going on around here. I clearly need a twin just to run errands.

I'm down to ramblings at this point....

How come I want to sew but every time I sit at my machine, my eyes get heavy??

Why is it that my son won't ask dad to do anything and comes straight to me??

How come dad doesn't offer when he asks me??

I really want to do some planting this weekend, I hope the weather behaves.

I made two cakes two weeks ago and I will never do that again. I keep reminding folks why cake decorators charge the way they do. It's alot of work in the details.

Status on WIP

So my simple skirt has been a challenge for me. I made my muslin using a size 18 waist and graded to a size 20 in the hips due to my measurements. WELL......the skirt sat a little lower than it was supposed to. It's supposed to sit about an 1" below the natural waist. This was lower that than. I also had a bit more room in the hips that I liked. So... back to the cutting board. I think I may need the size 16 waist and grade to a size 18 in the hips.

I did say that I wanted to sew better pieces, right???? Wish me luck.......

My WIP

With spring right around the corner, I have some really cute pieces that I would like to add to add my closet. But instead of turning out something, that will "just do", I want pieces that have better fit. I really don't have a lot of staples in my closet, so that's where I want to start. I have a pencil skirt pattern that I've made twice, but I wasn't quite satisfied w/ the fit. So, back to the drawing board with that and to the bookstore.

Right now, I am working on Simplicity 4036.

I have some fabric in mind for this skirt. So, before I jump in, I decided to make a muslin. I know this is a simple pattern and for some, it may not warrant a trial run, but for me, I have to. I have some curves that I have been playing around w/, so I hope to get the pattern grading just right. From what I have been able to determine from my measurements, this skirt will be graded from one size at the waist to another size at the hips. I found this tutorial, so I think that I am on the right track.

On the first run, the fit in the waist was just right. Now, I need to get the grading on the hips. Back to the drawing board. I hope to have this worked out by the weekend, so I should have my skirt soon. One of my goals for 2009 was to learn to insert an invisible zipper. So, I figure that I may as well get this down, too , while getting the fit of the skirt. Wish me luck!!!

Purse Challenge

It's finished! I know, I know another purse, surprise. This was for the Pattern Review Challenge

The pattern used was McCalls M4400 McCall's Fashion Accessories.

Pattern Description:Bags, Hat and Accessories

Pattern Sizing:No size

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? It did look like the photo

Were the instructions easy to follow? The instructions were easy to follow. I had to read one step twice before I had that AHA moment when sewing the gussetts of the lining.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I didn't like the hand sewing when it came time to attach the lining to the purse.

Fabric Used: I used a quilted fabric from Joanns. The handles were made from a UFO that was still on my machine. The fabric kind of looks like suede.

Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made: I didn't make any changes this time. If I make it again, I will add more pockets to the inside.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?Maybe, I think that my mom would like it.

Conclusion: Overall, a really cute purse and I like the look of the handle on the side. It's not just your usual tote bag.

I know that it's still winter, but ya know, I really want to sew some of my spring pieces. I know, I know, I can if I want to, but, if I make it now, I'll want to wear it now! Sad, I know. I did get a few patterns a few weeks ago and I still have some patterns that are lingering from last year that I would love to make. Maybe I'll get my butt in gear and do some sewing. So I ran, okay, drove to my local Hancock's Fabrics to scoop up the latest Butterick patterns b/c they were on sale for $1.99 each, limit 10. As you can see, no luck!!! They didn't have the Spring catalog out. I wasn't very happy, but I did manage to get some linen that was on sale at 50% off and stocked up on some thread as well as this was also 50% off. I'm trying to add more color to my rather bland closet, so one of these will be come a skirt. Well, I guess I'll have to wait and see what Joann's has to offer. Hope you had better luck!!!

Choices, Choices

So, I haven't sewn a stitch in days and I feel miserable. I hope to be back at it soon. I have been working on gumpaste flowers the last few days, so sewing has taken a back burner-GASP!!! I was checking my emails today and received an update from Butterick. Some of them seemed pretty promising for me, especially since I am quite the beginner still.
Now, this pattern I really like. I don't have print in my closet, so this little number would really add some color.
I know, I know, I need another jacket like a hole in my head. But, I like this jacket, especially view B.
Now, I'm not in to the nautical look, but, again I like this jacket. They can keep the skirt, I worn enough of those.

So, I see I'll have to wait for the pattern sales to see which ones I can snag.

Back to Basics

I stumbled upon this book sometime ago and got it as a gift.

I just recently "read" it and it has some nuggets of knowledge. One of Katherine Finney's tips is to have a closet w/ what she calls the Perfect 10. This list is as follows:

Black suit
White cotton dress shirt
Pair of plain black pumps
Perfect pair of jeans
Little black dress
T-shirts (preferably w/ some stretch)
Leather tote
Pair of sneakers
Trench coat
Khaki/chino pants

Now from the Perfect 10, there are should be at least 32 different combinations. I strayed away from my list and now I need to get back to it. I am tired of saying I have nothing to wear. Right now, the only item missing from my list is the LBD. I have a few patterns in my stash, I just can't decide which one to make.

So, I tried her theory and what do know, it works! Now, I have some other pieces in my closet besides this, so that really does help. Otherwise, it's not the most exciting. My t-shirts are in other colors besides black, white and blue (but I do have those!!) and they are great for layering. I have a few scarves that I use as well. Where I work is casual wear, but I try to keep it from getting " too" casual.

Some combos I have tried:

jeans+ t+shirt

trench coat(short version)+white dress shirt+khakis

white dress shirt + jeans

any color t-shirt + khakis

Now w/ all of these combos, I play around w/ accessories, shoes, etc.

I am still trying to find my way in this game of style and I know that to each, his own. I once read on www.monicamingo.com, that if you only buy clothes that look good on you, then you only have clothes in your closet that look good (I hope I got that right...) and fit well, also.

Now more then ever, the concept of shopping from you closet has become all the rage. I leave you with this:

A Year in Review

Like others out here, I have been inspired to sew more. This year, I have made a few pieces and have actually worn them! LOL. Most haven't been posted, because, again, I am not the most fashion forward person (that's changing) , so those pieces were more functional than fashionable.

For 2009, I have a few goals for myself:

Inserting an invisible zipper properly

Sew a mini-wardrobe, so that I can have that go to 'fit. I think that I will get started on this pretty soon for Spring.

Increase my fabric stash. I did a major purge right before Christmas, so I want to increase it a little so that I will be in a position to rely on my stash.

Work more w/ knits. I am scared to death of this fabric and I don't know why!

Add more color to my closet. Right now, it's pretty basic and I want to change that.

That's all for now. I think this is a pretty extensive list for me. Wish me luck!!

What Not to Wear

Okay, so I saw a jacket made up at my local Joanns and thought that it was cute. I bought this pattern

and it sat in my stash for quite some time. Hancock's Fabric had fleece on sale at $2.49/ yard, so I snagged a few yards for this coat.

So....
I make the coat. Didn't take long. I tried the coat on for DH and he laughs. He said that it looked like I was going to sing a choir!!. Then, when I added the belt, I looked like Mrs. Claus!! This is definitely a "What Not to Wear"! I have a few tweaks to make to it, like changing the pockets to reduce some of the bulk around my hips. As such, the only pic at this time will be on the hanger.....

Here's my review:

Fabric: Fleece

Pattern Description: Misses' jacket, coat,dress and pants. Unlined jacket and coat have high neck, drop shoulders, loose-fitting sleeves and optional snap closures.

Pattern Sizing:Multi-sized, 14-16-18-20, I made an 18.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?Yes, it did because I made it out of red.

Fabric Used:Red fleece.Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made:No alterations were done. I am going to go back on this one and change the pockets to a lining fabric to take away some the bulk around my hip area. Also instead of wearing it closed, I will be wearing it open.

Would you sew it again? Probably

Would you recommend it to others?It does have potential, just watch the fabric selection.

Conclusion: Overall, not a bad pattern, very easy to sew. I think I will give it another chance, just in a different fabric.

Okay, so I know I said that I would stay away from purses, but I couldn't help it. I orginally bought the red corduroy to make a skirt, but , as you all know, plans can change. I had this pattern in my stash for quite some time, just like my others. One day, while picking up my sewing area, I read the back of pattern. Hmmmm.... corduroy, huh?? I think I have that. Now for a contrast?? That took me a minute, but, again, while picking up, I ran across the cotton animal print. Okay, maybe I am on to something. That's when it hit me! Why not not the red w/ the animal print as a contrast? The pattern was Butterick B5109, view D. Well, what do you think??

Sewing for My Little Guy

Okay, so my little guy has really been hinting at wanting a messenger bag to carry "his stuff". We made a make shift one a while back and I hoped that this one would buy me some time. WRONG!! No we all know that children have great memories when it comes to remembering stuff that you said-especially if it something they want, but can't remember you telling them to clean their room! So, I kept my promise and made him the bag. I borrowed the pattern from someone at work and it was a pretty quick sew. He didn't know that I was making it as I wanted it to be a surprise. I had some upholstery fabric in my stash and used some blue fabric to line it. I think it turned out pretty good. The pattern is a See & Sew pattern and the number alludes me at the moment. When I can pin him down long enough, I'll catch a quick pic of him w/ it and I'll post it at a later date along w/ the pattern #. Whatta ya think???

Heaven on Earth

Early last week I went to a training class that I needed to attend for work. It was held at ESPN Zone. At the end of training, we were given game cards. I couldn't stay and play as I had to return back to work. Saturday, I took Chipmunk and JC there for lunch. Afterwards, he and JC hit the arcade. JC really had a great time. As we were heading out, Chipmunk didn't take his usual route. **SIDENOTE**I read a post on Real Life: Live & Unscripted. In it, Adrienne mentioned one of her favorite fabric spots to visit in Atlanta- Gail K Fabrics. I told Chipmunk about it and that I would like to go there one weekend. What I didn't know was that it was so close to where we had eaten lunch.

This place is AMAZING!! I walked in and was speechless. Unfortunately it was close to closing time, so I couldn't look around like I wanted to. I will definitely be going back there. It's not too far from where we live, but when I go back, I need to make sure that I have my game plan, because it's not around the corner like Jo-Ann's or Hancock Fabrics. I did find some really pretty fabric to make Simplicity 2816, View B.

What I Have Been Reading Lately

For a long time I was stuck in a rut. Didn't care about how I looked or what I even wore to work. All of this came about after having my son, because my body changed. As he got older and started participating in activities, I started noticing how the other mothers would come dressed to events. Did I look like that? I asked my husband one day this question and he answered, "Yes, unfortunately". It was right then and there that I decided that I needed to do better. That was over 4 years ago.

While I don't feel that I have fully arrived yet, I am getting closer every day to the way that I want I look. My closet isn't brimming over with clothes, and from what I have been reading, it doesn't need to. Just having the basics and filling in , can get you some great looks.

I recently purchased The Science of Sexy by Bradley Bayou. His approach is simple and easy to understand. The book was really a quick read and I found quite a few discoveries. With this knowledge, I now know "what not to wear".

So, the old me is out and I don't want her to come back, ever!

Sew Much to Sew and Sew Little Time!

Okay, so I've made a few pieces to get my feet wet. And, to my DH's surprise, I haven't made any purses or hats. But, I do have one purse cut out......

Any way, I have been eyeing the latest Anthropologie, and I have figured out that I need to get on the ball. Looking through it got me to thinking of what I would like for Fall/Winter. I don't know if I will be able to sew all of these pieces, but I will definitely give it a try. Here's what I have come up w/ so far.

something in a berry color, possibly a skirt

a sweater/knit vest type, possibly in an argyle print

a pair of winter white pants, wide-leg w/ a cuff

a winter white skirt

a black jacket-there are so many great patterns out there right now, I just can't decide

Now, I know that this list is kinda ordinary, but for me and what I have in my closet, it works. I have gotten a lot patterns, some inherited, so hopefully, some things will actually make it to my closet. I have other pieces I would to add, but I think this is enough to get me started. My patterns seem pretty easy, so I hope that I don't get too confused when I get started. I have been lurking, okay, stalking, other blogs and have truly been inspired. Wish me luck and I hope to have some pics soon.

My First Jacket

I started this jacket about two weeks ago and I can honestly say, I am hooked on jackets. The pattern is Butterick B4865-

Unlined raglan sleeve jacket has collar, sleeve and length variations

I made view D using a wool blend with grey, yellow, burgandy and turquoise stripes. I wanted to make this jacket out of this fabric so that it would work with other pieces in my closet. It's still too warm here in the South to wear this just yet, so I can't wait until that first cold day! Until next time, happy sewing!!

Fay's Gone Away!!!

Goodbye Fay! Thanks for the much needed rain here in GA, but like my mom says, "I'm glad to see you come and glad to see you go!" I have finished most of my sewing that I mentioned in my last post, but have been lazy in getting the pics posted. Now that the rain has stopped, I will be getting outside to have DH take the pics of my handiwork. Hope to have them posted soon!

I have been working on a list of pieces that I would like for Fall/Winter, so I will be posting them soon. Of course, I heart Anthropologie but hate the prices, so will be trying to "make the look" as close as I can. Hope to have that soon, too.

Testing the Water...

So I have been away for a little bit, just busy with life.

I've blown the dust off of my sewing machine and decided to give apparel sewing a try. Ever since my mother taught me how to sew, I was drawn to making accessories. One day, I was making a purse (again) and my husband asked me the dreaded question, "Are you making another purse? Do you need another one?" The horror of this man asking me if I needed another purse!

After that moment and much purusing online, I decided that I should give making my own clothes a try. While I consider myself to be at an intermediate level when it comes to accessories, I think that I am some where between a beginner and beginner advanced when it comes to apparel.

Like most us out here, I too, have been inspired by EricaB and Myraida. I made a few pattern purchases as well as fabric. Fall will be here soon, so I am trying to think ahead. I bought three Built By Wendy patterns, Simplicity 3966, Simplicity 4109 and Simplicity 3835.

Now, since this whole epiphany, I have made two pairs of shorts and a skirt, from B3460 and a top from Built By Wendy. While I know that the shorts and skirt may not be the most fashion forward in design, they were made out of some really cute fabrics and they serve my purpose. My next project will be to make this top from Simplicity. The yoke will be made from a black & white print and tunic will be black. I hope to have pics soon. Wish me luck!!!

Matlock revisted-sorta....

My mother was a big fan of a televison show called "Matlock". He was a fictional attorney based out of Georgia. In almost every episode, he could be seen wearing a seersucker suit. With that said, on my last visit home, my mother had some aqua & white seersucker fabric. So of course I took it. And.... made myself a hat. Can't wait to wear this little number when it warms up and stays warm. I have the perfect jeans to wear w/ but the the rest is still up in the air. I have a crisp white shirt w/ french cuffs that I think would definitely work but that to me would be too obvious. Until I run up on the right shirt, I will definitely work w/ what I have. Here she is...

It's done, finished, complete-but not quite right. So I finished my last WIP and I am very disappointed in myself. I hit one part in the directions that I simply could not figure out. I read it, reread it and still couldn't get. So I ended up doing my version of the purse. Don't get me wrong it's still okay, but that was not my goal, my goal was to make view A. I think one of my problems was using the wrong size handles. Mine were about an inch bigger. I have some of that fabric left, so I don't know what I'll do with the rest. I may try another view off the same pattern. Here it is...

I went to Jo-Anns and found some patterns to add to the stash. I have a lot of patterns for purses, hats, etc., but not for clothing. So I went for basics that way when I reach the level of my inspirations, http://www.ericabunker.com/ and http://www.domestichaven.wordpress.com/ , I will be able to switch it up a bit by changing necklines and buttonholes for example. I also have this book in my collection. It's an older book, but I like looking at for techniques that I would LOVE to try.
It's called "Make it Your Own, Personalizing Patterns for Creative Design" by Lori Bottom and Ronda Chaney.

I had enough with my hair. I stopped going to the salon many moons ago ,because my purse was really taking a hit. When I stopped doing that, it just seemed like I gave up on trying to look cute and that started to show in my hair and in my clothes.

One night while surfing I ran across www.monicamingo.com from erica b.'s site. Her site is quite a jewel! On it, she talks about her everyday life, just like we all do. Over on the sidebar, she has a topic called 2007 Hair Care Regimen, http://http://creoleindc.typepad.com/healthy_hair_care_regimen/. I clicked on it and began to read. Am I so glad that I did!!!

Through her hair trip, she takes you on her jounery for longer, thicker fuller hair. So, now I am trying to do better. I, too, have started my own hair journey and from what I have been able to find online, this is not a new topic, just new to ME!

Will keep my progress posted. Thank you CreoleinDC for showing and inspiring me to do better.

So I Made A Shirt....

So I have been trying to do better about my sewing and have found inspiration all over the web from http://www.ericabunker.com/ to http://www.domestichaven.wordpress.com/. With that said, I purchased this pattern some time ago with the hopes of my sister making it for me while she was visiting here on her vacay, but she didn't.

So I made it myself!! Mind you this is the first time I have made any clothing in quite some time. I have done it, but was often discouraged by the way that they would turn out. In other words, they would look home-sewn, so I wouldn't wear them. I took my time and I must say, I would definitely wear this one out. Should I make this one again, I would defintely add about 2" to the length as it was a little short for my taste. I also didn't add the ribbions from the view because it seemed a a bit on the junior side and I am certainly no junior!!!

So here it is...

Shirt + Sweater

So I had a sweater that had a faux shirt attached to it. I liked it but wasn't crazy about it, so I stopped wearing it. One day at my local Goodwill I found a cute shirt in the mens section. I got the shirt home and it fit a little snug across the bustline. Then it hit me-DING! Why not marry the two together? I cut the cuffs off and attached them at the end of the sweater. I then cut a deep V in the shirt w/ three of the buttons buttoned up. I came across the back just above the shoulders. I then pinned it all down and stitched it. I now I have a cute shirt that I am happy to wear. See......

Now I have to decide what to do with the shirt. I think I may turn it into a jacket w/ wide cuffs. So another WIP I guess....

The Orginal Refashionista Diva to Me.......

My grandmother passed away on February 06, 2008. Her health had been failing for quite some time so it wasn't sudden, but I was still unprepared for the phone call that I got at 6:30 pm.

Nanny, as she was affectionately called, was to me, the original refashionista diva in my family. She could take what appeared to be nothing to you and turn it into something beautiful and functional. She could see a picture of a piece of clothing and copy it. She loved to quilt as well as sew. She would make a quilt for you, and if you had a baby, a quilt for him or her. And, if your baby had a baby, another quilt was made. If you gave her a greeting card with a design on the front, that picture would end up on quilt for you- all hand sewn!

I didn't really appreciate her vast sewing skills until I was older. I look at my mother now and see all of those qualities of her mother in her. When I go home to visit, I am joined at her hip to soak up what she knows as far as sewing is concerned. Oh I wish she lived closer!!!

So with that, I know that I need to appreciate what has been handed down to me and keep it alive so that I can pass on what I know to my son. Sewing is a life skill but more so a part of who I am. So for all that sew, embrace it, develop it and above all, appreciate it!

It's Been Awhile....

It's been awhile since my last post. I have had a lot going on like most people. Survived the holidays and now I am trying to get ready for Summer and Spring. I have completed a few projects since my last entry. Here's one of them......

I found these Banana Republic jeans at my local Goodwill and they were my favorite price, 1/2 priced. Got them home, cleaned 'um up, tried them on and they were a little short for my taste. So I cut them just below knee, cut about 3 inches above the hem of the jeans and sewed them together for some denim capris for Spring. I found some really unique buttons to put on the sides for a bit of interest. Can't wait to rock these!!!

I have a few more WIPs to post soon. Right now they are on the floor, on the sewing table and in my head!!!!

Ready for Fall

So today is Labor Day and w/ that I have been thinking about Fall. Since I have been trying to do good by not buying any new patterns (now that's been hard!!), I found this pattern in my stash. Over the Spring I found some faux fur and didn't know what I was going to do with it, but now I have an answer. This is my new WIP....

I plan on making the faux fur headband and pom pom scarf. If I have enough left over, I think a muff would be too cute!!! Will keep you posted.

Other WIPs right now are a diaper bag for a friend that is having a baby boy w/ accessories to match like a roll up bag, a changing pad and bibs. Got quite a long list so I need to get started...

So I finished the WIP and decided not to use pintucks because that seemed to be a bit busy for me. Instead, I came in about an inch on each side and tapered up to the sleeve. Viola!! A great fitting shirt that will definitely look cute w/ a pair of khaki pants ( from my list), a fitted tee-shirt in white (also from the list) and some cute ballet flats, maybe...now for a purse. Will need to think about this one b/c one can never have too many purses. I will post the completed outfit together soon.

I read this great book called "How to Become a Budget Fashionista" by Kathryn Finney. For those of you who have not discovered this book, you are really missing out!! It may be small in in stature but it packs a mighty punch. Not only does she give you a great foundation to start with, she also gives great resources, recipes and sources. Now, I have decided to make an effort to really watch my pennies and this has trickled down to my shopping habits. So without further ado, here's my list...

MADE A JACKET

Found a great book called 99 Ways to Cut, Sew & Deck Out Your Denim and this was a great find for me. This book shows you how to take a pair of jears or two and make some great digs. This jacket idea was in there so I had to try it. This bolero jacket was made from the legs of a pair of jeans. I then found some fabric at store that was going out business and used that as the trim for the cuffs and band. Will definitely go back to this book again.....

MADE A BAG FOR SOMEONE

I made this bag for one of my co-workers. She had a pair of pants that were a little small for her, but she didn't want to part with them. I suggested that she make a bag out of them. She was game for the idea. I had her to bring them and during lunch I was going to show her how to do it. But, that didn't work so I ended up bringing them home w/ me to make for her. The end result-one very happy teenager. I cut the pants below the crotch and added a band of fabric that was from an old sheet( man, that sheet has been showing up everywhere). I quilted it before I added. The handles were made frm the legs of the pants w/ yep, more of the same sheet in between in each piece. Added a d- ring and voila-plaid messenger bag. She was really pleased and surprised at how it came out. Next WIP is a bolero jacket from a pair of jeans. Pics coming soon.....

NEW MAKE-UP TOTE

I found a faux leather Old Navy skirt at the thrift store for a whopping $1.00. As if I didn't have enough bags, why not make one more!! The handles are stuffed w/ some stuffing from the stash. I didn't want to make it too big, so I decided to make it small enough to carry my makeup.

I have not had a chance to do a lot of refashioning the last few weeks due to some personal issues. But, I have rebounded. My first refashion is not a new one, but nonetheless a good one. I had a tee shirt that was screaming for a refashion, so I turned it into a peasant style top. The pants were given to me by a friend so I shortened them a wee bit. The purse was made from some fabric in the stash that was given to me by by mom, using a great tutorial found on www.supereggplant.com. The lining was made from a bed sheet from a previous refashion project. Total cost for the outfit-ZERO!! Man, that felt great saying that!!I will probably do another tee shirt like this to wear with a skirt that I refashioned in my first two month pledge. As well as another purse, as I am such the acessory gal. I hope to post more soon as there are several works in progress.

DRY SPELL

TWO SKIRTS

I found a sheet at a thrift store w/ the cute eyelet border. I then took the border and stitched it to the top of a pair of pants that were too short. The results, a cute peasant skirt.

I then took the bottom of the hemmed portion of the sheet and stitched it to a wrap skirt that was too short for me to wear out in public.

TWO IN ONE

I had some down time this weekend so I decided to finish up some projects. The first was a black wool Harve Bernard jumper that I found at the thrift store for $2.00. I added white fabric circles stitched w/ a black blanket stitch. I then sewed a button in the middle to add some interest.

My other project is not a new refashion idea but still a good one none the less. This corduroy skirt was made from a pair of corduroy pants that had seen better days. I had some some yarn left from another project that didn't work so I used it to do a stitch around the hem and the pockets. I have to admit that since doing this refashion pledge, I have become inspired from what I see in the stores to duplicate at home from thrift stores and my stash. Yeah for refashioning!!!!

COOKIES AND CREME

This is a white cake w/ chocolate creme sandwich cookies and cream cheese icing. Hubbie is a big cake eater so getting him not to TOUCH IT was a big feat in itself.

For those that remember the camo ruffled skirt...I found a shirt to match in hubbie's closet. I shortened it and covered the collar with some fabric from the stash. Will be adding cuffs from the same fabric, too. Haven't quite decided what I am going to do with the hem. Definitely will be removing the blue tape! Based upon all of this, I will this a work in progress. Will post the completed pixs soon w/ the skirt to boot.

This wool skirt found me at thrift store not too far from my house. It was a size 10 and I am far from that :)!! I have a friend that was in need of a bag to carry her lunch and "stuff" in so I made her this bag. She absolutley loved and it didn't believe me when I told her that it was made from a skirt.

2 Purses 2 Many

I refashioned this purse from a suede skirt that I found at a thrift store. It was supposed to be part of a costume for Halloween ( was going to be Pocohantas) but we ended up changing our minds. I thought that I would wear it out on, but when I tried it on, I felt that it was a little short to wear out. The sides were mid-thigh but the front and back came to a point in the front. Sorry that I didn't take a picture before, but here is the after. I cut the front and back to be even with the sides. I then used this to be the fringe. I punched holes into the leather and threaded the leather "string" through the holes and double knotted it. The handles were attached with strips of the same leather and then attached to the bag w/ a leather glue.

My necktie bag came about from my stash. I butted the edges of the ties together w/ a zigzag stitch. I made the back from some denim that was also in my stash. The handle is made from one of the ties and stitched to bag on the sides. Big brown buttons were placed on the ends as decoration only.

I've had this striped skirt in my stash for quite some time and couldn't think of what to do with it. I am all for the preppy look, but this was too much for moi. So... I chopped off a portion just above the hem and made this be the strap. I attached this w/ D rings. I kept the integrity of the top of the skirt so that the pockets could be used. The bottom was simply stitched across and and sewn across in the usual triangle stitch to give a boxy feel. Kinda reminds me of a messenger bag in a way. I have some pink fabric in my stash, so this will probably be the lining. I had some white 1/4" ribbon so I did a blanket stitch on the pockets (don't think that you can see this in the pics). This was a fun project, will definitely keep my eyes open to make something like this again.

Spring to Summer Skirt

Saw this litle white skirt at my local thrift store for whoppin' $1.98. Didn't want to keep it that way so I jazzed it up w/ a sheet that I found in the housewares section of the same store. I found this tutorial while surfing one night for turning a pair of pants into a ruffled skirt on www.scorpiosattic.com. Liked it so much that I made two =)! The camouflage skirt was made from a pair of my husband's pants from his military days. The other skirt is made from a pair of pants that I found at a thrift store for $2.00. I have worn them alone, but I think that they would look better when worn with leggings.

Today is not a good day. My husband has kindly informed me that my digital camera is having some technical difficulties. Apparently they have done a recall on my particular camera for the lens so I have to send it back. OH NO!!! What will I do, the horror of having no camera to document the creative process just leaves me in a funk. Okay so maybe I am being a bit dramatic. My husband has a back up camera that I can use, so I will be okay. Hope to be back at it soon. Have several projects on the table, so I hope to post again soon....

BIG BIRD'S YELLOW HAT

I found this size 4T girls sweater at 1/2 price day at my local thrift store. It was in my stash for a long time until it hit me-BAM!!( in the words of Emeril) why not make a hat. I used the hem from the sweater as the hem of the hat. The "pom-pom" was made from strips cut from the same sweater. It turned out too small for me, but my friend has a three-year old daughter who would love it. I still have the sleeves left, so I am definitely open to suggestions. From skirt to tote......

I found this suede skirt at my local thrift store for $1.98. It wasn't my size,but my plan was not to wear it but to carry it! I am such a purse and shoe gal so making a tote bag or purse was my only option. My husband was pleasantly suprised with my first refashion. I now have a great bag to carry my books, sketch pad and lunch. I will definitely be on the look out for more leather and suede skirts. Hope ya like!
